How to Operate Machine Gun Turrets in Fallout 4
Depends on your gun nut and science level. With gun nut 3 you can build missile launching turrets. With science level 3 you can build heavy laser turrets. In between are laser turrets, heavy machinegun turrets, and shotgun turrets. On Spectacle Island, which is often my retirement resort, it's not unusual for my defense rating to run well over 250. A guided missile turret provides 15 defense by itself, a heavy laser 12, and the low end, a light machinegun only gets you 5.
i guess dan got the question wrong because it was typed so unspecific.
its not about the turret types but about the MK what the TS describes as "level" . if so its only the machine gun and heavy machine gun turrets that matter in this case. at least that what i derive out of this spongy question.
if so MK1 is min MK7 is max what you can get. and what do you mean with covenant is far away? thats not far, thats right around the next corner from sanctuary. Warwick is far away...
the difficulty spikes up from NW to SE, so does the minmax levels of the machinegun turrets. you can select the turret for build, than look at the MK level on the chassy in the preview, if it dont suits you dismiss the build and select the turret again for build. sometimes it can already help to try building the turret at another place in the setlement to get different results.

Slog is to much to the north and not far enove to the east, so the difficulty of the area dont let you get MK7

What do you mean by mark V and mark VII? Are there other types of turrets than light machinegun, heavy machinegun, shotgun machinegun, light laser machinegun, strobe light turret, heavy laser turret, and missile turret?
Spectacle Island is pretty far south and east, but I've never had other turrets available there. That I know of.....

Easiest way to explain it.
Also, as Stardustfire notes, the location of your settlement (and character level) will limit the max level of the turret you can get. These ONLY affect MG and HMG turrets, the others only have 1 rank.

aside from my main outpost, playing as a raider, i don't care about other settlements lol. They have issues such as lack of defense, beds etc but who cares man, ima raider!
Wait--is this all based on a mod? Because I don't use mods on survival difficulty. I believe the HE on mod 3 would stand for high explosive, so anything over mod 1 is going to ruin your cows. But on Spectacle Island most of my defense value comes from high powered laser turrets and rocket launcher turrets, so--if I had brahams they would be excrement outta luck.

No, it's not from a mod, it's just part of vanilla FO4. You're correct in the Mk3 being High Explosive though. :)
Funny. I have built high powered machine gun turrets on Spectacle Island, but I've never noticed the different mods. Of course I've never looked for the different mod numbers before. So, does a mod 7 get a higher defense rating than a mod 1? If a mod 1 gets an 8, what would a mod 7 get? It would not seem correct if it got the same number.
Also, would Taffington Boathouse qualify for any of these higher mods? I have quite a few high powered machine guns there.

The Settlement defence rating from them does not change, so they're still only worth 5 and 8 pts, but they'll do more damage during combat, in order to compensate for the higher general level / hp etc of enemies in those areas.
Basically, defence rating is only a mathematical number for factoring in the % chance of settlement attack. There's an explanation into how it works on the wiki.

I don't recall where different Mk's of turrets become available, but I'd be guessing that Taffington would probably have Mk 5 as maximum. Not 100% though, so could easily be wrong.

The turret Mk you get depends on how far you are from Sanctuary.
If the turrets you previously built at a settlement aren't at the Mk you expect (because your level wasn't high enough when you built them) there's an easy fix. In workshop mode store the turret, then put it back down. It should now be one of the higher Mks.
Okay I just took Ziamonda Lookout for the Railroad. I notice I am getting mark 3--and only mark 3 for the machinegun turrets. I am level 27, so does that mean mark 3 is as high as the area allows--it's in the far north--or that's as high as my level allows me to build?
Amazing! I have over 10,000 hours in the game, and I never heard of this before today. Live and learn. Also I wonder if the mark 3's cut loose will you see explosives where they hit. It might be a good idea to hold off on machine gun turrets, and just put out shotgun turrets and low level laser turrets while I'm a low level character.

The turret rating will go up usually based on the enemies that that settlement will face , 7 is the highest, you can also once you select to build a turret, change to either fire or explosive by either not building it if its the one you don't like and try again till you get the type you want then build them. Sanctuary is usually 1.
